Alexandria’s much-loved Town Hall will soon undergo a restoration aimed at restoring the 136-year-old building to its former glory.

Proposed work on the heritage listed building on Garden Street includes restoring the façade, roof and interiors, to ensure it continues to function as an accessible, safe and usable venue for the community.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the restoration project would breathe new life into the building and protect it for future generations.

“Alexandria Town Hall is an important civic building, we have a responsibility to make sure it meets the future needs of the community,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We want it to be an accessible and welcoming space for everyone, so it can be used for more meetings and events, as well as providing essential services for our growing community.”

Remediation and repair work includes:

  • restoration of the building’s exterior and interior
  • waterproofing to protect the building structure
  • painting of the exterior and interior surfaces
  • refurbishing the heritage timber windows and doors
  • repointing the front façade heritage brickwork
  • restoring the main heritage hall ceiling and anteroom
  • minor structural repairs and remediation to emergency exit stairs.

The two-storey brick building was constructed between 1881 and 1928, and was built for the new municipality of Alexandria after the community’s rapid growth in the 1860s.

It was used as a public school in the 1880s and 1890s, and in 1919 served as a temporary hospital, soup kitchen and general haven during the great influenza epidemic that swept the world.

The City of Sydney will continuously monitor performance standards during the construction work that is due to start in April and expected to be completed by October this year.
