Rock fishing workshops angling for increased safety

October 12, 2017

Randwick Council and the NSW Government are holding three free workshops for rock fishers to help improve techniques and skills as well as safety, with every attendee receiving a free life jacket.

“Our coastline has so much to offer, including some spectacular fishing spots, and we want people to enjoy rock fishing,” said Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey. “We also want to make sure that our rock fishers return safely home to their families. These workshops will help ensure that they do, and they may even see an increase in their catch rate.”

The free hands-on workshops will be hosted by professional rock fishing guide Alex Bellissimo, who is regarded as one of Sydney’s leading rock fishing experts.

More than 17 people have died while rock fishing in the Randwick City area in the past decade or so making it the most dangerous place to rock fish in Australia.

The fatalities lead the NSW Government in December 2016 to introduce legislation requiring lifejackets to be worn while rock fishing the Randwick City area.

The workshops will be held at the Prince Henry Centre, Little Bay on Wednesday 25 October, Saturday 28 October and Wednesday 1 November.

The workshops are free but bookings are essential online at www.rockfishingworkshops.eventbrite.com.
