Randwick Council urges beachgoers to keep the scene they love clean

March 16, 2016

Randwick City Council is inspiring beachgoers to keep Coogee Beach clean with a creative anti-litter education campaign titled ‘Love this scene, let’s keep it clean’.

The campaign uses signage on bins, banners, pavement decals, and even fun comic characters to deliver its message.

Council staff are at the beach on weekends speaking to people about their attitudes towards litter and providing information about the practical realities of keeping the beaches and surrounding areas clean.

Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza says the response to the campaign has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Keeping our beaches clean is everyone’s responsibility. Council staff spend a considerable amount of time and effort in picking up rubbish and grooming the beach each morning to remove litter. There are also a number of community groups who meet at the beach to help out and pick up rubbish too which is fantastic.

“There are simple measures we can all take which make a huge difference – like putting your rubbish in the correct bins or taking it with you.

“Contamination from small, broken plastic rubbish is already a problem on our beaches and once it is there it is hard to remove,” says Mayor D’Souza.

Six hundred people have already made pledges to put their rubbish in the bin during the first two weeks of the campaign.
